Overstay

An overstay happens when a truck stays at your Location longer than the period the Customer booked. TRAVIS captures the extra time in an Overstay request, reviews it, and charges the Customer for the additional stay with a separate overstay Transaction.

What is an overstay

A parking Booking covers a fixed period, from the booked arrival to the booked departure. The price of the Booking is charged with a Transaction for that period. When the truck arrives earlier or leaves later than booked, the actual stay is longer than what has been paid for. That extra time is the overstay.

Overstays only apply to parking Bookings. A stay without a Booking is charged for its actual duration in a single Transaction, so there is nothing to compare with.

Reporting the actual stay

TRAVIS will create Overstay requests automatically for you when we know the actual arrival and departure times of a Parking Booking. As a Partner you can provide these when using one of the following solutions:

  • Parking Drive-In solution: the Check-out endpoint receives the actual arrival and departure times and creates the Overstay request automatically when needed.
  • Partner - Booking API: the arrival and departure PATCH endpoints add the actual arrival and departure times to a parking Booking which will trigger TRAVIS to create the Overstay request.

Review process

When an Overstay request is created, it goes through an automatic review process in the background. In most cases, the system will automatically approve or decline the request. Sometimes it will be flagged to be reviewed by a TRAVIS employee, in which case it will take a bit longer to get approved. Overstay requests have 3 states:

States

State Description
pending The Overstay request has been created and awaits review. No Transaction has been created yet.
approved The Overstay request has been accepted and the overstay Transaction has been created.
declined The Overstay request has been rejected, the Customer is not charged for it.

Pricing

The price of an overstay is not calculated for the extra time on its own. TRAVIS determines the price of the full stay, the booked period plus the overstay, and compares it with the price of the original Booking. The overstay Transaction is charged for the difference.

If using pricing configured via TRAVIS, Parking prices are organised in price tiers based on the length of the stay. When the full stay still falls within the price tier of the original Booking, the price does not change and no overstay Transaction is needed, resulting in a declined Overstay request. When the full stay moves to a higher price tier, the difference between both tiers is charged.
